Thanks so much for creating a profile for your child to attend our drop-in sessions. This helps ensure we have on hand the important information needed to support your young person’s safety, including allergies, medical needs, and emergency contacts.
Please ignore the date of this session. Your child is not required to attend, we just need a booking to create their profile.
Drop-in sessions don't require any bookings. Youth can attend both our Paetara Aspiring Central and Lake Hāwea Community Centre youth centres. For session times, visit kahuyouth.org
We encourage all parents and caregivers of young people attending our drop-in sessions to read the important info about how the sessions run, what is expected, and how we support the safety of youth. This can be found at kahuyouth.org/drop-in/ or below...
FOOD & ALLERGIES
You can read our full Food and Allergy Information for Parents/Caregivers on our website kahuyouth.org/key-documents/
Kāhu Youth provides free food for youth at our drop-in sessions. This food is mostly made up of donated food from Kiwi Harvest and local cafes. Because of this we don’t always know the ingredients within food items, or if any cross contamination has occurred.
For this reason we ask that youth with severe allergies (such as anaphylaxis) bring their own food to Kāhu Youth.
For youth with mild allergic reactions, we ask that they take extra care and speak to a Youth Worker to understand the safest choices prior to eating any food.
If your child has an allergy ensure you communicate this clearly in their ClassForKids profile, including triggers, medication, emergency procedure. Please email your child’s allergy plan to info@kahuyouthtrust.org. Please also read our Allergy and Food Policy that can be found here. This sets out how we manage food at the centre in more detail and the responsibilities of Youth Workers, parents/caregivers and youth in keeping youth safe.
SUPERVISION
While the sessions are unstructured and youth-led (youth get to choose how they spend their time), they are supervised by Youth Workers to ensure a safe and inclusive space for everyone. Youth Workers build positive relationships with youth during drop-in sessions and are available for additional support when needed. Youth are able to come and go as they please from the youth centre, once they have left we are unable to supervise them. We ask parents/caregivers to discuss with their young person their expectations.
INTERNET USE
Youth have access to the Kāhu Youth wifi during drop-in. We have the following rules to keep youth safer while online.
Be kind – stay away from cyberbullying and toxic behaviour.
Use device zones – if you are on a screen.
Keep your info private - never share your full name, address, school or phone number. This keeps your information safe from strangers.
Game with people in the room – not strangers.
Create not consume – no scrolling reels or shorts.
ACTIVITIES
We have a range of activities available to youth depending on the youth centre (Wānaka / Hāwea).
Creative projects – playful, hands-on activities include slime making, painting, macrame, jewellery making, clay sculpting, resin moulds, furniture building, nail painting and tie dye.
Sports & active play – are a great way to burn off that afterschool energy, with table tennis, pool, air hockey, foosball and basketball.
Music – our fully equipped music room boasts acoustic and electric guitars, base guitar, keyboard and electronic drums.
Baking – our kitchen allows youth to bake up a storm, and help prepare food to share with their peers.
Gaming – a social gaming setup with a Nintendo connected to a 65-inch TV and 8 controllers so youth can game together.
